Workshops will take place beginning February 2 at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY.

Foundations for the Future: Understanding Development: The DIR/FLOORTIME Model will take place on Thursday, February 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Taught by infant mental health pioneer, Serena Wieder, Ph.D, the workshop emphasizes the importance of early experiences and interactions in a child’s life on moving all aspects of their development forward. This program will examine the developmental profiles of different children and families using a dynamic model guided by the best theory, principles and practices available as we strive for optimal outcomes.  These experiences and interactions are processed through the Developmental, Individual Difference, and Relationship-Based model or the DIR/Floortime model.

Shelter From the Storm: Effective Interventions with Children Affected by Domestic Violence will take place on Friday, March 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Early registration will be available until February 9. This workshop dispels the myth that children under eight years of age are too young to be affected by witnessing domestic violence. Exploring the effects of witnessing violence on young children, particular attention will be given to the effects of traumatic exposure to domestic violence on the parent-child relationship, and the developmental vulnerabilities of very young children.  Instructor Betsy McAlister Groves, M.S.W, LICSW, will provide a hands-on view of children affected by familial domestic violence through clinical case examples and research at the Child Witness to Violence Project at the Boston Medical Center, where she has served as program director for the past 30 years.

Play Therapy with Children who Have Experienced Trauma and Loss will take place on Friday, April 27, from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. Early registration will be available until March 26. Because children are often ill-equipped to express feelings through words, play therapy enables them to demonstrate their feelings in nonverbal symbolic ways. Traumatized children can often express their feelings of grief and work through their trauma by playing within the safe context of the therapeutic helping relationship. Providing strategies for traumatized children to express their pain efficiently, this workshop will be led by Nancy Boyd Webb, D.S.W., LICSW, RPT-S, who is a Distinguished Professor of Social Work Emerita at Fordham University.

Ouch! My Sock Hurts Part II: Strategies for Intervention will take place on Thursday, June 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Early registration will be available until May 7. Marie Anzalone, ScD, OTR, FAOTA will explore the nuances of a child’s sensory development and reactions, while providing a three part model of intervention to help parents better understand sensory processing disorders among infants and toddlers. Dr. Anzalone is an Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Virginia Commonwealth University.
